Texas relata la pérdida de gran parte del territorio mexicano a manos de los estadounidenses en 1845.

«¡Nos birlaron el territorio!, porque bien mirado, ¿cuál compra?,
¿cuál guerra?, por más que le den a la hilacha, fue hurto.»

La pérdida de la mitad del territorio mexicano era reciente. Tras la independencia de Texas, su anexión a Estados Unidos y la intervención estadounidense en México que desplazó al sur la frontera, los mexicanos de la región se encontraron con que ya vivían en otro país y enfrentaron la codicia de los norteamericanos.

Así las cosas, un día de 1859, en la ciudad fronteriza de Bruneville, Texas, el sheriff Shears insulta a Nepomuceno: «Cállate, grasiento pelado». El agraviado es un rico terrateniente mexicano, y el agresor un mal carpintero norteamericano que porta la insignia porque nadie más la quiere.

La noticia del insulto corre veloz por Bruneville, sube hasta el Río Nueces, incursiona la Apachería, también camina hacia el sur, cruza el río Bravo, pasa por la ciudad vecina (Matasánchez) y se sigue. Ambos desenfundan sus armas y Shears queda herido por un disparo de Nepomuceno, quien huye, cruza el río y acampa en territorio mexicano. Los odios apenas contenidos se desatan. Ce jour-là, donc, deux écrivains qui vivaient et travaillaient avec les mots ont lancé aux lycéens rassemblées : « Nous allons vous écrire une grammaire lisible ! C’est juré. » Erik et moi sommes ensuite retournés à nos travaux, nous croisant de loin en loin. Il a tenu parole le premier, et traité le sujet sous forme de contes. Je lambinais. Dans mes déplacements de Perpignan à Lille, Dreux, Amiens, Besançon, j’ai bavardé avec des lectrices et des lecteurs, des profs de français, des lycéens, des parents. Ils me poussaient : - Vous vous y mettez quand ? - Revenez nous voir avec votre grammaire ! Je devais tenir à mon tour la promesse de Rennes. Nous pouvons déchiffrer, gribouiller, ânonner, nous suffire d’un langage pénible et hésitant, mais dans la vie moderne, même pour se promener sur Internet, mieux vaut lire, écrire et parler clair. La grammaire n’est qu’un mode d’emploi qui évolue avec l’usage et le temps. Ce n’est pas une punition mais une nécessité, un droit, une chance et un jeu. »
